Bats was inspired by a surreal moment during a stay at an U.K. estate where Salvador Dali, Magritte, Man Ray and Picasso had once been guests. I was returning to my room when I remembered I had left behind my compact umbrella in the pub. When I tracked back to the main hall, I saw that someone had thoughtfully hung my umbrella near the tapestry behind the desk. When I reached for it, it flew away.
If you listen closely at about 1:04, you will hear what was formerly my umbrella (reality: one bat) swooping through this hall and joining another in a crescendo of swift, aerial arcs. The stutter is their echolocating.
